The The Penguin NAS2 4 Bay Mini Server For GNU / Linux packs a lot of power in a small package. It's fast, upgradeable (RAM), and based on the Intel N150 4 cores 3.60GHz processor (just 6W TDP). Unlike many NAS devices on the market this one has proper support for free software operating systems (as do all our other products in the catalog) ensuring that it'll work today, tomorrow, and far into the future. This Network Area Storage device works great for the home office and small business user.

  • Standards compliant: Most NAS devices now restrict access to their full functionality based on which drives you buy, pushing users into getting drives from the NAS manufacturer, and most NAS devices are locked down using digital restrictions in other ways as well. For instance you typically can't install any operating system, but are forced to utilize that of the manufacturers. These restrictions endanger rather than protect your data, but fortunately our NAS2 4 Bay Mini Server isn't locked down or restricted in any way and puts you the user in control through our adoption of standards like Flex power supplies, ITX x86 motherboards, and a choice of operating system.

RAID is typically used to protect data in the event of a drive failure. Raid 0 doesn't protect data, but can make 2-4 drives appear as one. Raid 1 protects data by mirroring 2 drives. Raid 5 works with 3+ drives and offers fault tolerance and redundancy.

The disk(s) can be partitioned using one of a few different schemes. If unsure choose the first option. If you want something else entirely select other and enter the description of how you want the system setup in the distribution to install section.
